In 2008 the Government of Omsk Region backed the suggestion of the city’s musical community that a competition of violinists, devoted to the 100th anniversary of a great fellow townsman and a celebrated teacher Yuri Yankelevich, should be held in Omsk. The idea was shared by Vladimir Spivakov, a People’s Artist of the USSR and one of Yuri Yankelevitch’s pupils, who became the Honorary President of the competition, while another pupil of Yankelevitch, Alexander Brussilovsky, agreed to head the Jury.

The International Yankelevitch Violin Competition is to become the most ambitious and important event in the cultural life of Omsk Region. Its aim is not only to promote in every possible way the development of domestic performing and teaching traditions, but primarily to enable the younger generation of gifted violinists to fully show their worth.
